After Installation – fireplaces, surrounds and inserts

Our cast iron fireplaces, inserts, grates and baskets are protected from atmospheric moisture by the application of stove paint and our special blend of cast iron paste.

Initial cleaning after installation requires a light polishing with a soft nylon brush or a lint free cloth. This will help to protect the fireplace and highlight the detail of the castings, as the natural light in the room or light from the fire reflects outwards.

The protective layer of iron paste should last for a couple of years before you need to re-apply but do note that cast iron is a ferrous material and is susceptible to moisture from day-to-day spills and from atmospheric conditions like condensation and damp. With this in mind, please note that fresh plaster, drying paint and other liquid-based household products can increase the humidity levels in your room.

DO NOT use a wet or damp cloth to clean your cast iron fireplace. Getting it wet will result in rust appearing on your fireplace. Tip: If you do get a spot of rust on your cast iron and want to avoid a full re-application of cast iron paste, a dab of WD40 or similar on a cloth-covered fingertip will help you get rid of most of it.

Regular cleaning and maintenance

Monthly: It is recommended you lightly dust over the fireplace with a lint free cloth to remove all dust, then give it a quick rub with a soft, dry nylon brush. That’s it!

Annually: Use your lint free cloth or a small stiff brush (like a toothbrush) to apply cast iron past to all outward facing parts of your fireplace. Apply the iron paste thinly (so as to avoid clogging up any ironwork) using the small brush or cloth and allow the paste to dry for at least four hours. Once it is all dry, rub the fireplace with a cotton cloth gently all over to give it a polished, reflective finish.

Recommended products

Products such as Liberon Iron Paste or any other proprietary stove or grate polish can be applied to the cast iron. Please follow the manufacturers’ instructions when using such products, wear disposable gloves, scruffy clothes and cover the surrounding area with dust sheets. Cast iron paste is very difficult to remove from fabric and carpets. Do be careful.
